Are you struggling to know your true identity? Well, this is one of the biggest issues most of us are facing today. Many people don't know who they are and what they are called to do. Too often we tend to let society, social media or culture dictate who and what we are supposed to be, thinking that it is the best way to follow. We want to imitate the famous sayings, songs, trends or the crowd in general. And, sadly, many are relying on past experiences or things like horoscope signs to define them or their personality traits. But I am here to tell you that all of these things do not define who you are as a person, and are not your source of freedom. Your identity is also not depended on the negative words that others has spread to you. These sources will only keep drawing you to darkness, confusion, comparison, depression, or even planting seeds of insecurities in you. Your identity can solely be found in Christ. Only God, as our creator can tell you who you are. In the bible, what does God say about us? He calls us his children, loved, forgiven, worthy, precious, chosen, and most importantly he has given each of us a purpose. Jeremiah 1:v.5 remind us that before God formed us in our mother's womb, he knew us and already had a plan, which means that he knows every little details about you.
How is it like to know your identity in Christ?
It is seeing yourself through God's lens and embracing all of the qualities and gifts he has given you. It is also to stand firmly in what he calls you to do, and showing the light of Christ in whatever you do.
There are three amazing things that come with being sure of your true identity:
1- When relying on the word of God to know who you are, you do not try to fit in to society's standards, you stand firm in what your creator says about you instead of what the world says or the lies of the enemy. And eventually, you will start noticing more confidence and boldness in you.
2- You will start rejecting comparison. Have you ever heard the saying that "Comparison is the thief of Joy"? Well, it is also the thief of identity and purpose. When knowing your identity in Christ, because you are rooted in his word, when thoughts of comparison and doubts come, you have the power to reject these thoughts by repeating what God says about you through scriptures. Let's say for instance, you see a post on social media which lead you to compare and feel as if you are a failure. Whisper back to yourself that God has a great plan for you and that you are filled with purpose, just as it says in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the lord. Plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future".
3- Your purpose becomes more clear. Knowing your identity in Christ means that you listen less to the voice of society, social media or culture and begin to seek more what God is telling you. With his voice overpowering, the more guidance you receive from the Holy Spirit, and therefore have more clarity on your calling.
"But, how do I get to know my identity in Christ"? you may ask.
In order to know who you are, it is very important to have a relationship with God, meaning that you must seek his kingdom through spending time in his presence by praying, worshipping, reading and applying his word. It is identity in christ, therefore, you have to remain in him as the source.
Secondly, surround yourself with the right community, people that will boost you up, and tell you words of joy and of encouragement. In proverbs 27: 9, it says that a sweet friendship refreshes the soul, and further in verse 17, it says: "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another". This shows the amazing impact that the right people can have on us.
Thirdly, find your passions. Think about what you love to do, most of the time they are the gifts and talents that God has placed inside of you. Is it writing, Volunteering, speaking? Anything you feel that you are great at and that can be used for God's glory, focus on developing them. It is all of these details that contribute to your purpose and true identity.
